The Swimwear Industry Forgot Women Over 55. Here Are 7 Things We’d Fix.

We asked Australian women between 55 and 74 what they actually want from a swimsuit. Not one of them said “make me look 25.”

We make swimwear, so read this with that in mind. But every complaint below came from women who don’t work for us — and we haven’t fixed all of them.

Walk into any swim department in November and count the models on the walls. Then count how many of them are over forty.

It isn’t that the industry dislikes older women. It’s that it has quietly decided we’re a problem to be solved — something to cover, minimise, or distract from. So we get more fabric, darker colours, and the word flattering repeated until it stops meaning anything.

Summer is about to start here. We asked women what they’d actually change. Here’s what came back.

1“Flattering” became a polite word for “hiding.”

Ask a woman of 58 what she wants and she’ll say something that fits properly. The industry hears something that covers. Those are not the same request, and the gap between them is why so many suits stay in the drawer.

2Straps that dig in after twenty minutes.

Nobody writes about this because it isn’t glamorous. A narrow strap carrying real weight leaves a mark and an ache. Wider straps and a back that distributes load aren’t a compromise — they’re just better engineering, and they should be standard.

3Nobody designs for shoulders that don’t move the way they used to.

Peeling a wet suit off over your head with a stiff shoulder is the single most-complained-about moment in swimming, and not one brand mentions it. Four-way stretch matters here more than it does anywhere on the beach.

The one we made about it

Or keep reading — there are four more.

Texture that camouflages, stretch that skims.

4Fabric that goes see-through the moment it’s wet.

You find out in the water, in front of people, which is the worst possible place to find out. Denser knit and a proper lining cost more to make. That is the entire reason cheap swimwear is cheap.

5Sizing that stops at XL, as if we stopped existing.

This one still astonishes us. A brand will write a whole campaign about “every body” and then end the size run at XL. If the range doesn’t go past XL, the campaign was decoration.

6Tight is not the same as smooth — and tight reads as older.

The “tummy-control” suit is the first thing most women are pointed at, and it’s a trap. Squeeze the middle hard enough and you create a rigid torso that sits oddly against softer arms and legs. The contrast is what the eye notices. Smoothing flatters. Compressing announces itself.

7We asked for comfortable. They sold us cover-up.

Every woman we spoke to had bought at least one suit she never wore twice. Not because it looked wrong — because it was a nuisance. Comfort is not the lesser request. After 55 it is the whole request, and it is the one the industry keeps treating as optional.

“The industry didn’t decide women over 55 stopped swimming. It just stopped designing as though we hadn’t.”BetterTan Editorial

So we made the one we kept being asked for

Not a miracle, and not a disguise. A one-piece cut to flatter rather than squeeze, in a textured crinkle Italian fabric — 93% polyamide, 7% elastane — with true four-way stretch. The texture camouflages, the stretch skims, and the shoulders move. UPF 50+ on every panel. Sized XS to 3XL, because that part isn’t optional either.

If you’ve read this far, you already know whether it’s for you.
