I am one of the 75 percent of women in the United States who has had a vaginal yeast infection. I'm also one of the 40–45 percent who have had two or more.

#1The Biology

Your vulva runs on a delicate, acidic pH — and it is more easily disrupted than you've been told.

The healthy vulvar pH (3.8–4.2) is roughly the acidity of black coffee.

The acid is maintained by Lactobacillus bacteria, which suppress the growth of Candida (the yeast responsible for ~90 percent of vaginal yeast infections, per NIH).

When that pH rises, the bacteria die back. Candida wakes up.

Almost everything we've been told about feminine hygiene focuses on what to put ON the vulva: this soap, that wipe, this wash. The science is much more concerned with what stays AGAINST the vulva.

Cleveland Clinic explicitly lists 'staying in wet clothes or swimsuits' as a yeast infection risk factor.

The recommendation is in the published consensus. Almost no patient hears it.

Not 'consider changing.' Not 'if convenient.' It is named directly, by one of the largest medical institutions in the United States, on their public health library page on vaginal yeast infections.

This is the most consistently repeated, most underdiscussed piece of women's health guidance in the country.

#3The Mechanism

The pool isn't the problem. The 90 minutes after the pool is.

It's not the swim. It's how long the suit stays damp afterward.

The chlorine isn't doing it. The salt isn't doing it. Your hygiene isn't failing.

What's happening is mechanical. Three things stack the moment you walk out of the water and sit down: trapped heat from your own body, trapped moisture from the water, and zero airflow because the fabric is sealed flat against your skin.

#4The One No Doctor Mentions

The fabric of your swimsuit is the single biggest variable nobody talks about.

Check the label on any swimsuit you currently own. The numbers tell you how long it stays wet.

This is the one most doctors don't mention, because most doctors aren't textile engineers and aren't sitting on the manufacturing side of the swim industry.

That's a six-to-fifteen-times difference. In real-world terms: a cotton-blend swimsuit is still damp during dinner. A high-quality polyamide swimsuit is dry by the time you finish your first drink.

Most mass-market American swim ($30–80 range) is built on cotton-polyester blends. The reason is wholesale cost, not performance.

#5Same Mechanism, Other Places

Your underarms and under-breast area are dealing with the same thing.

Wet swim tops do it too. The mechanism is the same in any skin-fold area.

This isn't only a vulvar issue. The same warm-damp-occluded environment that promotes Candida growth in the groin also affects the under-breast and armpit areas — a related condition called intertrigo.

The 'antifungal cream every August' cycle is treatable at the source.

Treating the symptom doesn't change the cause. The cause repeats every summer.

Roughly 6.8 million women in the United States get a yeast infection every year (peer-reviewed survey, Sexually Transmitted Diseases journal, 2022).

Around 5 percent — roughly 3.4 million women — have what's called recurrent VVC, defined as three or more episodes per year.

If you've been in that cycle, here's what's worth understanding: the standard medical response (antifungal cream, sometimes oral fluconazole) treats the symptom. It doesn't address what created the conditions that allowed the overgrowth in the first place.

Dryness is protective. The longer you stay damp, the more the protective acidity erodes.

That comes down to fabric. 93 percent polyamide / 7 percent elastane, milled in Italy, is the standard that European competitive teams have used for decades. It dries in 25–30 minutes. It holds shape. It does not go see-through.

I'm not going to claim swimwear prevents yeast infections. The published literature doesn't say that, and I won't either. What it does say is that the warm-damp-occluded microclimate is one of the consistently named risk factors, and that fabric drying speed determines how long that microclimate lasts.
