7 Things Every Woman Should Know About Wet Swimwear And Yeast Infections (Most Doctors Don't Mention #4)

Cleveland Clinic and the National Institutes of Health have flagged a single, specific behavior pattern as a major risk factor. Here is the science — and the one number on the inside of your swimsuit that decides how often you spend the summer on antifungal cream.

I am one of the 75 percent of women in the United States who has had a vaginal yeast infection. I'm also one of the 40–45 percent who have had two or more.

#1The Biology

Your vulva runs on a delicate, acidic pH — and it is more easily disrupted than you've been told.

The healthy vulvar pH (3.8–4.2) is roughly the acidity of black coffee.

The acid is maintained by Lactobacillus bacteria, which suppress the growth of Candida (the yeast responsible for ~90 percent of vaginal yeast infections, per NIH).

When that pH rises, the bacteria die back. Candida wakes up.

Almost everything we've been told about feminine hygiene focuses on what to put ON the vulva: this soap, that wipe, this wash. The science is much more concerned with what stays AGAINST the vulva.

#2The Authority

Cleveland Clinic explicitly lists 'staying in wet clothes or swimsuits' as a yeast infection risk factor.

The recommendation is in the published consensus. Almost no patient hears it.

Not 'consider changing.' Not 'if convenient.' It is named directly, by one of the largest medical institutions in the United States, on their public health library page on vaginal yeast infections.

Cleveland Clinic — Prevention: 'Changing out of wet clothing as soon as possible (bathing suits or gym clothes).'

NIH StatPearls (2023): 'Keeping the vaginal area dry by changing out of wet clothes immediately after swimming or exercising.'

This is the most consistently repeated, most underdiscussed piece of women's health guidance in the country.

#3The Mechanism

The pool isn't the problem. The 90 minutes after the pool is.

It's not the swim. It's how long the suit stays damp afterward.

The chlorine isn't doing it. The salt isn't doing it. Your hygiene isn't failing.

What's happening is mechanical. Three things stack the moment you walk out of the water and sit down: trapped heat from your own body, trapped moisture from the water, and zero airflow because the fabric is sealed flat against your skin.

PMC5909782 — Recurrent Candidal Intertrigo, 2018: 'The moisture and increased temperature on the surface of opposing skin folds provide a suitable medium for the growth of Candida and bacteria.'

It's not the pool. It's the ninety minutes after.

#4The One No Doctor Mentions

The fabric of your swimsuit is the single biggest variable nobody talks about.

Check the label on any swimsuit you currently own. The numbers tell you how long it stays wet.

This is the one most doctors don't mention, because most doctors aren't textile engineers and aren't sitting on the manufacturing side of the swim industry.

Textile science · ACS InChemistry: Cotton: ~8.5% moisture regain · 3–6 hours to dry. Polyamide (nylon): ~4% moisture regain · 25–30 minutes to dry.

That's a six-to-fifteen-times difference. In real-world terms: a cotton-blend swimsuit is still damp during dinner. A high-quality polyamide swimsuit is dry by the time you finish your first drink.

Most mass-market American swim ($30–80 range) is built on cotton-polyester blends. The reason is wholesale cost, not performance.

Women have switched the fabric

“I'd given up on beach trips by my third antifungal cream of the summer. One season of polyamide changed everything.”

“I bought one to test it. Came home, hung it up, came back twenty minutes later and it was dry to the touch.”

“I had no idea fabric was the variable. Twenty years of summers, fixed by a swimsuit.”

#5Same Mechanism, Other Places

Your underarms and under-breast area are dealing with the same thing.

Wet swim tops do it too. The mechanism is the same in any skin-fold area.

This isn't only a vulvar issue. The same warm-damp-occluded environment that promotes Candida growth in the groin also affects the under-breast and armpit areas — a related condition called intertrigo.

NIH StatPearls — Intertrigo: 'Candida species thrive in warm, high-moisture conditions, making them a common cause of secondary infections in intertrigo cases.'

A wet swim top, sitting on damp under-breast skin for hours, isn't a different problem. It's the same problem in a different location.

#6The Cycle

The 'antifungal cream every August' cycle is treatable at the source.

Treating the symptom doesn't change the cause. The cause repeats every summer.

Roughly 6.8 million women in the United States get a yeast infection every year (peer-reviewed survey, Sexually Transmitted Diseases journal, 2022).

Around 5 percent — roughly 3.4 million women — have what's called recurrent VVC, defined as three or more episodes per year.

If you've been in that cycle, here's what's worth understanding: the standard medical response (antifungal cream, sometimes oral fluconazole) treats the symptom. It doesn't address what created the conditions that allowed the overgrowth in the first place.

Dryness is protective. The longer you stay damp, the more the protective acidity erodes.

#7The Smallest Intervention

The smallest intervention you can run is also the cheapest.

Fabric is the lever. Italian polyamide is the standard.

You can't change your hormones. You can't change your antibiotic history. You can't undo whatever your microbiome has already been through.

The single behavioral lever you can pull, with the highest evidence support and lowest cost, is the speed at which your swimsuit dries.

That comes down to fabric. 93 percent polyamide / 7 percent elastane, milled in Italy, is the standard that European competitive teams have used for decades. It dries in 25–30 minutes. It holds shape. It does not go see-through.

I'm not going to claim swimwear prevents yeast infections. The published literature doesn't say that, and I won't either. What it does say is that the warm-damp-occluded microclimate is one of the consistently named risk factors, and that fabric drying speed determines how long that microclimate lasts.

The signature Crinkle texture

Most swim fabric goes flat the moment it gets wet. Our Italian Carvico Crinkle holds its shape — when you sit, when you stretch, when you climb out of the pool. The texture is not decorative; it is structural memory built into the weave.
